it does look like a b&w desert shot eh. Its actually ice! and no playing with the colours, my hike last month really did look like this

hiking in Daisetsuzan National Park in Hokkaido, Japan :) the trail went across this ice for almost 1km.

Lack of water??? It looks like it could be a dry river bed. If it is that is an interesting take on the theme. Unfortunately it is a little hard for me to tell.
