To me the face is much more "the subject" than what he's holding, partly because he's not engaged with the phone. I like the sense of motion.

Panning right or cropping from the left would have helped in two ways: eliminate the feeling of crowding the right of the frame/moving out of the frame and eliminate the distracting blown out highlights.
