what a great collection. can't wait to hear the story.

These pots were found in the excavation of Pompeii, Italy. Pompeii was buried under volcanic debris and ash from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. The entire town was beautifully preserved under the debris and it's amazing to walk through the streets and into the buildings knowing that this place is 2,000 years old.

I am a little worried relevance will be low since not a lot of people will consider the pots to look old. But they truly are.

Oh, it's wonderful! Thanks for sharing where these were from. I gave it a 5, knowing this wasn't a pottery class. : )

In which one I can find an ancient Jinn?

beckn32 said 2251 days ago:

Thanks very much Ana.

It'd have to be a treasure hunt Klimin if you're looking for a Genie. :o) (I had to look up what a Jinn was.)

This is a good documentary shot, but I think you could have continued with a number of post-processing steps to make this image really stand out. High marks in all but impact.

King, thank you very much. Can you help and let me know what you think would help with the processing? I love the learning experience of posting here.

Kim,
I wouldn't presume to be able to teach you anything--I think you are a very good photographer. It's a matter of artistic taste, and yours may change over time or because of WeeklyShot comments. What Pete pointed out was one of the things I was referring to in my initial comment.

Do you have Photoshop available to you? I'm working *very* intensely on becoming expert at Photoshop--not the gimmicks, but the parts of Photoshop that would have been so advantageous to have available to me in the 70's through the early 90's (pre digital), when I was a professional.

What I would do, in a fashion as close to old-school photography as possible (dodging and burning--lightening and darkening), is accentuate the finer, more interesting pots and parts of pots, and to minimize the areas that do no contribute the impact I might want the image to have. In addition, I would use the great, essential Photoshop tools, mentioned so often on WeeklyShot, called Curves, Levels, Hue/Saturation and Selective Color to tweak the image until it stands up and speaks on my monitor, hoping that will be adequate to carry through on the monitors of other viewers.

I may expend a lot of time and energy doing these things with this image--hours--because I think this image is worth it.

Lecture over--do you have any specific questions?

this photo could be better if you focus more on one subject, like the pots.. a more dramatic composition would also add to it. i would like to see this cropped closer and maybe in b&w too.

Thank you King. Every time I come to WS or Vazaar I learn something. I appreciate your help and I value your comments greatly. I do have Photoshop Elements. I'm having a hard time with the thought of spending so much money on Photoshop. I have a feeling I'll make the upgrade sometime.

Hmmm, I thought this would do well here, but alas, ratings are very low. Oh well, another try another time.
