Who in southern California owns a long telephoto and knows to use a tripod? I know Jarrett Gorin does, but this is not typical of this images. Windy day...look at those white caps. I think that the dad's position behind the water pole(?) is awkward, but kudos for including some real neighbors in the photo. This also has a strange tonal quality, as if it were scanned from a print. Also, the boy on the left doesn't look like a Californian.
On the other hand, this could have been taken by Montage.
I like it.

@culberda...I would normally agree. However, my hunch is that the photography had the scene and perspective in mind (wanted to use that long telephoto), then found some people. This may have been a stronger photo without the people, especially if reframed.

Pentax A 70-210mm f/4
Where do you live, pog? Beautiful diptych seascape on your web page.

@King: Thanks for the kind words! This is actually Kalepolepo Park in Kihei (Maui, Hawaii), about a mile or 2 from my house... these are friends/relatives. I wanted some un-posed shots (for a change) and the only way I could get that with this group was from 210mm away. LOL! When I was processing this image, I was thinking of the 1-hour photomat prints I used to see when I was a kid in the '70s...
@culberda: I agree, closer is often more interesting/engaging. Most of my pictures are taken at normal lengths but sometimes you just seize the moment and shoot what you see with what you got on your camera. :)

There is something about this I really like. A simple composition but the saturation makes it really different.

This is a little too detatched for my liking. Engage your subjects, good candid photography requires you get up close, in my humble opinion.
