I think if only the word Nighclub were in the scene, and, thereby, enlarging the musician, this might have more impact. Good ratings nevertheless. I assume this is RF. Good b/w, RF.

Classic!

I thought that too - but it would mean a non standard aspect ratio. I wanted square but the bow is just a tad too long. I guess 6 x 4.5 may have worked, 4x3 didn't. It was originally xpan and much longer - so I cropped to 16:9 to make it more normal but still show the barren surrounds.

This I think was SFX200 without an IR filter on...

The interesting part of this shot is that it was done in Nanjing on my first trip there. I was in a taxi and saw him in this spot under a nightclub sign as I drive past in a taxi - on the opposite side of the road. I couldn't and didn't stop.

About 3-4 hours later I am walking about shooting and started to somehow remember the roads and scenes so I followed my zen navigation hoping to end up on the same route - not expecting him to still be there.

Well my zen worked and he was there still.

@Richard...I crop in whatever proportion looks best to me, but I respect your judgment. Good back story, too. Thanks.

Rock on daddy-0. Love it.

Beamer said 950 days ago:

Seem almost like he is a statue. All sense of movement is gone, I'm not saying that as a critique, just an observation...

Beamer said 950 days ago:

Did you scan as RGB to get the pinkish tone? Nice one Richard!! Thought it was probably yours...

Willem_de_VL said 950 days ago:

Very good this one

fun!

kyla said 950 days ago:

I love this- when will it land on the front page?

Oh the soul of music

JIMJIM said 950 days ago:

Nice capt !
the NIGHTCLUB then makes it fun too !!

RichardFord said 950 days ago:

@ King

True - I am a fan of images that aren't so "stubby" - so to speak. I find 4x3 and 3x2 too stubby and fat. Square though I quite like. Cropping from the far edge of the gap in the words and then to the right of the bow just looked to stout and stubby for me.

Oh well - such is life. Unless you want to stage everything - which can work. ;-)

@ Beamer

Yes - doing all scans in RGB now as it apeases aperture's needs to edit.

SFX200 does have a slightly pink backing. Just like the PAN F 50 on my ground level shot had a yellowish one... I just leave it in unless it is obviously bad.

Damn Ana!

MaximusM3 said 950 days ago:

Nice one, Mr Ford!

RichardFord said 950 days ago:

What's your take Max? Crop in as King suggests or not?

Beamer said 950 days ago:

Congrats!!

Beamer said 950 days ago:

Well, not that you asked, but I tried the scroll bar crop and no I would not re-crop!! I like it best like it is.

MaximusM3 said 949 days ago:

Crop?? Why? I can see what King is saying but, composition wise, I like it the way it is. Street scenes never have to be perfect to work.

King said 949 days ago:

I didn't say cropping would make it perfect, but I have a suggestion.

Imagine that the actual photo is the left side of the frame--to the left of the N in nightclub. How well would that stand alone? Now say how much it adds to the overall impact of the scene, specially to the degree that it reduces the allowable size of the musician in the frame (because the frame width is limited to 750px).

If this shot were reduced in size, then to have the musician, larger in the frame--the subject, after all--sitting under the single word, "NIGHTCLUB," would make this even more poignant and touching a scene.
