Sorry .. that's grain shot with film : My digital had to much fine dirt on the sensor.. Glad you like it...somewhat:)

I like this a lot. Her skin tone seems a bit red, but nonetheless it's great environmental portrait.
George said 1004 days ago:
wings, where was this taken?
wings said 1004 days ago:
@ George Thanks It's a cross between two things. the Kelvin Temp is redish from the morning sun riseand the face they live on red earth. what you can see is that the red is not in her blue crushed velvet. Last is the fact the wind blows and even a non person of color would be red with in an hour. After a day you shower off red clay from your pores and hair. Oh thus the old cowboy tern "RED MAN" :( not a nice thing to say now but back in the old Hollywood days it men the bad guys, or Red Skins. The kelven temp is 5400.

@George northern Arizona between black masa and page and off road over an evil cliff You got to keep the nose of your 4x4 pointed straight down, or roll and come up with scrambled brains and tossed cameras. No direct road but hey. That's the kind of guy I am Any way just so you know she didn't speak English. So after I said yah-hata-Shema I was without a paddle.

The color seems a bit off in this, and I see a lot of pixels? Over saturation?
The light seems oddly unreal..as if it's in the clouds behind the hut, but also in front.

Is that a yurt?! The base image is gorgeous but the processing is over the top for my tastes.
wings said 1003 days ago:
@iiso100, No friend it is a Hogan. a traditional Navajo hut of logs and earth. They are very red from the red earth. If you have not been in these areas, Then it becomes hard to imagine. No grass for starters, and no local forest or star bucks. In fact its hard to even be there. These reservations are the final homes in American History where Americans of the desert were driven to. these people are left rot so to speak. But it is their sovereign land but with the American government intervention. I think Yurts have skin and sticks. In fact this Navajo woman was defending her home from the continued relocation when we need energy to run our computers and charge our camera batteries.

There seems to be 2 light sources here. One behind the hut up in the clouds and the other shining brightly on her hand and tool. The image feels heavily processed and over saturated. A fine subject just not that well executed imo.
lbimaging said 1003 days ago:
Wow. She commands the morning light. Nice. High marks.
Beamer said 1003 days ago:
Great to talk to you today, bet you would give me an ear full if I called back right about now?? Is the main light source on her front the sun?? Seems like the sun is behind the hogan up there in the clouds?? Maybe I'm looking at the clouds wrong? The image really does look pixelated in an odd way, maybe the scan or the downres'ing for the net? Did you scan a print or a neg or a slide?
wings said 1003 days ago:
@BEAMER I GUSS I WOULD :)
wings said 1003 days ago:
@beamer fuji film vevia iso rated at 40. mini bare bulb which puts out 360 degrees of light. two stops under.Without it this could not run in a magazine. the inks would muttle up.

I almost like the edit but in the end it is too harsh. The image has potential but you will need to get down and dirty with perfecting the edit. I don't mind her face being sooo red either but darken the background if you leave it that way. Start with making everything softer. JMHO
Beamer said 1003 days ago:
Yeah, when I was writing the second post I thought to my self, I bet it's Velvia and the bare bulb explains a lot about the lighting. This is one of those that probably looks way better in mag print or in a print than here on the web.

wings, very interesting to read the story behind this. you da man. this deserves its spot on the home page, but that may matter more to you than me since i can see it right here :)

@George, Nicely put my friend. It's the old thing about how many stars you get. Personally I feel this one has been and education to some. When I think of where, why many shoot, what colors, or environment that surrounds them. This was a situation probable no one will ever encounter. The personal quest for something completely outside the box is what I strive for. Nothing easy, always difficult in the face of capturing an image. After all I could have sat a gold fish bowl on the table and let the sun strike it at morning. I guess I'm not surprised. For me the joy is in the finding and doing. Being different to an extreme to leave my mark when life ends. Its not about ego. It's about experiences to share. It's here and for all to read as well of their responses. Technical comments is but a mere shell and has nothing to do with a photograph of content at all. You can't learn it, it has to find you if you are lucky to be open to it when that moment comes. In the end one discovers a level of photography durning that moment and hopefully begins a new path by learning. One can only hope for growth after the capture, but its not likely. We are all too comfortable in our extended environments out side one's backyard. I agree with you George. It's posted ,and here it will stay as a low resolution. Cheers and as you said," you can see it right here." All good things come regardless.

wings, you're a poet and you didn't even know it. ha. i'm in cahoots with your philosophy. absolutely. i saw once on tv some talking head interviewing the rich and famous and politicians etc. the question asked was, "if you could do one thing to change the world, what would it be?" most people responded with "end world hunger" and "discover the cure for cancer" and other noble things. but desmond tutu hit the nail on the head. when he was asked the question, he said, "i would give everyone a funny hat," and he smiled. "we seem to take ourselves too seriously," he said. "but it's hard to take yourself seriously when you're wearing a funny hat." i quite like that philosophy. cheers my friend.

"Being different to an extreme to leave my mark when life ends." a goal we should all embrace!!

@george, A bit of humor. I'm embracing 2012 my friend, and the Mayan calendar. The Hopi's also have a calendar or some great wisdom of things to come. All three talk about it. All three feel foreign to me. But when you roam with a camera you meet all kinds. All the things you mention are correct on the topic of save the earth and man kind… I recall the cry to heal the ocean, but clean our beach would have been something we all could accomplish.
At the start of 2K, scientist said our solar system will start to travel through the densest part of the galaxy. Astronomers reported its likely well meet the end from a collision with a big rock in space. Hollywood got jazzed and produced a few save the earth from Meteors. Bruce Willis became a hero again, got paid and we left the movie house feeling better until we all realized how silly that is.
With the Hubbell and it's astronomical sister toys in space,They also talk about a black hole. They say we are all traveling towards it. It's located in the dense part. A know brainer really. So our sun is acting up with incredible solar flares that create wonderful northern lights. Could it be because we've spiraling around its magnetic force and likes for other galaxies and star matter. While this is Phenomena is happening our sun is reacting from some disturbance. The solar flares are apart of the sun's activity is now being associated to the green house and problems on hearth. We are heating up from space and very little by man. Like a Jules Verne Chapter from his novel, maybe we should all build submarines and try to evolve with gills and web feet. Being fishy would no longer offend us. :)) If you like space crafts and the Sifi channel. Then maybe Battle Star Galactica will be cool zipping around in space. We could prolong life while we look for a new earth.
Time for a new specie to survive in a new environment. WIth all this in mind and the proven fact the earth took a 12 degree shift from the tsunami that hit Thailand. Our gyroscope is on a true wobble. Thursday Queens , apart of New York City Had its first two tornados. The second Tornado hit Staten Island. Ok its time for me to wear my funny hat. I have a few. I'm thinking of wearing them all and taking my camera out to record the superstitious types that believe Voodoo will help protect them from disasters. When their done with the chicken I'm sure it'll end up on someone's plate along side plantains and rice. What a culture we live in..:))) I'm going to Starbucks now . Cheers … Nah new nah new.:) (Mork and Mindy). Thanks for reading my humor , It's fun to generate this stuff..

Without sounding insulting, the processing of this image is terrible. You have a really wonderful picture here, high marks from me on everything, except Image Quality.
Flatline said 1002 days ago:
Well, I get the underlying story now. I gave it all 5s except Image Quality. Maybe this works better in print, or it needs a higher-res scan, but this tiny JPG is doing it no justice.

Too much noise, but the relevance for the light is good.
