It was dark in there. i had to meter off the floor so outside was always going to be blown right out. BW film....

YES! Fits the theme!!

Part of the fun in observing this picture is wondering what he's doing in there.
Great image for such a theme.

I really enjoyed this image! I think it is excellent. Questions I have in terms of choices you made in taking this image.... a) Did you purposefully choose a vantage point parallel with the path of the manhole to the person as well as possible? b) In some ways, the vantage point obscures the idea on whether this *is* actually a manhole in a street *OR* if it could be some sort of tube in the wall of a building. The bricks of the road further lend to that possibility. I like the ambiguity. Was it intentional?
In your editing of the image, did you crop it specifically in this form, or is it from the camera? The reason I ask, is that (at least to me) I would want to see the entire circle of metal where the manhole cover fits (you have cut off a bit of the top and bottom of this in your image). If you did crop it, I am presume it may be to make the image of the person more prominent.

Hello in there!! I know you I'm pretty sure. Ending one Theme and starting a new one, huh?

nice shot

Great interpretation of the theme. Overall high marks but the burnt out highlights bother me.

@ Lange
That is my foot up there in the top right. The image is rotated 180 degrees. I had a 35mm lens on (film) and I was already reaching up high to get the circle in frame and still able to somehow peer into the view finder to frame it. This is the full frame scan as it came out. I wish I could claim effort in framing beyond just getting it all in there with the lens and the fact that to get "over"the hole parrallel is sort of hard without going into it and/or having my legs in the frame.
Not to mention taking to long to shoot and disturbing the scene.

@ duncmc
Zone 0 inside and Zone X outside. This was deliberate spot metering. The day was sunny - the hole was black - no way in hell - even with this BW film to get that dynamic range caught. If it was digi or colour film it would have been worse.
A human eye would be able to compensate but not a camera. I like the fact that if you know about exposure it really shows just how dark the hole was. ;-)

Great One!

Most def inside.
Wasn't so sure I would like the processing on this when looking at the thumbnail but the larger version is fine. A few minor distractions but i like it. Good job.

Great contrast and timing.

Look at what the power of a mouse click can do....

Congrats my friend!!

The fun thing is that it looks a bit like a giant tumble dryer. And the exposure really is spot on for the effect intended... Still enough detail left in the over exposed bits to keep a bit of contrast...
You say you did spot metering. Did you meter for the deepest shadow? And did you check if the face would be within the dynamic range, or was that pretty obvious?
The detail of the objects in the shadows is really great...

Spot on exposure, blowing out the surrounding area. Congratulations on the feature :)

This is beautiful. Great shot. Glad to see something not so intentional for the category that easily could have been.

@ Willem
I measured off of the dirt that is in the top left opposite his face.... exposure for shadows, dev for highlights.

Thanks for the info. I don´t use film anymore but I love what you do with it. The only developing I do is digital which is also fun to do, but quite a different thing.
