This may be a very morbid comparison, but the shot reminds me of a documentary I saw on how the Nazis seperated out prisoners - the strong from the weak - as they came off the train wagons. Obviously this has a lot of impact on me. In this case, a black-and-white treatment might have been even stronger, but that is tied to my personal association of this image.
On a technical note, it seems slightly over-sharpened, which is esp. visible around the creases in the skin of the right hand. I have found that it works well to use a soft approach when working with skin.

I may be mistaken but aren't the crossed fingers a symbol used to show that someone is under duress? I remember hearing it somewhere but I cannot remember where. My son is military. I will ask him, perhaps he knows and can tell me.

Thanks for the comments. A disclaimer as this was shot a few months ago and my photoshop sharpening skills weren't as refined as they are now.
This was shot at a Memorial Day event at the Presidio in SF. If I recall correctly it's an older African-American US Navy veteran in full uniform and he was standing right in front of me during the event.
