What is this police doing? That device looks like the one you can read barcodes with in the grocery store. :)

"Do you feel Lucky"
I would have to say, this rocks no matter the story and should be up now and forget the votes. What's in his hand and how everyone is looking is not a definite conformation because she appears to be a tourist, and there is no conformation to back the image up, with a she's in danger story.. But It almost reminds me of the shot in Vietnam where the captive has just been shot by a general and his hair on the left side looks blown out and he's falling from the shot. It hasn't happen here but it's the pointing arm and the thing in his hand that stirs my thoughts. NIce shot no matter what. You just don't see this even from this point of view, and even if it is a device to read locations.or even if it is a radar gun. nice eye opener friend.

Obviously this is a powerful photo...couldn't they find a less onerous way to check someone's temperature? I'm surprised you got away with taking this photo. High marks.

@wings, who wrote, "Do you feel Lucky?"
How aptly that quote sums up the sinister mood of this image.

During SARS in 2003 - many locals of Beijing did not know the full extent of the disease until one break away leader, Wu Yi (the only female in the top China cabinet) blew the whistle on the full scale of the situation.
After that, a very strong public opinion developed that "Foreigners" were the cause of the problem, and that foreigners brought in the disease.
For someone who has witnessed SARS first hand and now pig flu (H1N1) - the out stretched arm at maximum distance and profiling of the foreigner for testing and not a local brings back many of the memories of SARS and how stigma, stereotype and prejudice are very effective tools for use in an act of political "spin".
Nikon EM, Nikkor AIS 50 1.8, APX 100 in D76 pure - then a dunk in kodak rapid selenium 1+4 for 30 seconds.

@ Willem a common comment re that Eddy Adams shot of the general.
Beamer said 943 days ago:
In the U.S. that would be a Taser!!
RichardFord said 943 days ago:
@ Beamer and there would also be a racial element as well!
Willem_de_VL said 943 days ago:
@ Richard,
Not so much a comment but this image triggered the memory of the other one instantly...
RichardFord said 943 days ago:
@ Willem - yes a lot of people have said that....that says more about the other shot than mine. That other shot is so iconic. Along of course with Nick Ut's shot of the napalm girl.

Yet these images and experiences that stick in the back of our minds are very important in the way we look at new images and experiences.
Each individual has his own specific memories and experiences which partly overlap with others (individuals and groups) sharing and discussing that is what makes photography interesting to me.
I'm not that good at making documentary or street shots, but I love reading them
