@Richard...when I was in China in 1980, I saw (apparently heterosexual) men walking down the street holding hands. I thought it was touching.

Yes - continues today. Men will openly hug and rest on each other or sit on laps. Friendship and western concerns about what is or isn't masculine/gay/lesbian/public/private all not an issue amongst friends - any gender.
