Made me laugh immediately - great impact.

TracyMartin said 1014 days ago:

That was the intent so I am glad it made you laugh. He made me laugh that day as well and many times since.

I say that under my breath . Err but never mean it. Oh great shot love the city some how the image looks strange like a blurred out composite. Still nice even with his elephant tongue. Hey I think he wanted your peanuts. ::))))))

transpixt said 1014 days ago:

This says more "urban attitude" than "city" theme-wise, but it definitely has impact.

Beamer said 1014 days ago:

Well, Mark's already done 3 this week, so...?? High on Impact I suppose!

Beamer said 1014 days ago:

Well, of course, who else!

Lange said 1014 days ago:

A very interesting shot. I think it fits well in the theme for "City". Oddly, though, the person's expression is (to me anyhow) at odds with his sign. He seems rather too nonchalant. I would have felt his message would have fit his sign better if there had been more of an appearance of anger or disdain. I suspect that may have been his *intent* but the moment of the capture of this photograph his expression has more of a "silly" or "half hearted" expression to it which seems so different from his message. But, I do applaud you greatly for taking images of people. For me it is a hard and difficult task.

TracyMartin said 1014 days ago:

@Lange - Thanks for your thoughts. Typically I avoid shooting the homeless/vagrants in cities but this scene just begged to be captured and when I lifted the camera he saw me and gave me the 'pose'. As for shooting people, I have always preferred photographing people but I am also a bit uncomfortable about it on the street. I have a secret weapon though, the knowledge that I am not out there doing it alone and that Mark isn't far away. Strength in numbers. :)

@Beamer - this isn't a competition you hillbilly... ;) This was actually going to be my first post and then I thought it may be interpreted wrong.

pursang said 1014 days ago:

Um, I just noticed he has his tongue out. As I recall, when he presented his written greeting to me, he kept his mouth shut. Looks like his sign held a different meaning for you than for me!

Gringo said 1014 days ago:

Well….. He certainly looks the part of some city dwellers. The impact of the image is strong. Shock impact is often a love it or hate it kind of thing. Children walk past and stare at him… old people pretend he isn’t there. That is the thought that makes this photo work for me. Your technique is quite good. You’ve softened the clutter from the background and kept all the interest on the subject. Image quality is excellent. The over-all message is a little harsh in a general sense. I wouldn’t know where to hang this one.

I like it....hope you got the message :D

Jem said 1014 days ago:

Powerful photo - i'm torn between smiling and sympathising with him. Would love to hear the story behind this :)

Jem said 1014 days ago:

Guess my vote tipped it over the scale - grats on the feature :)

Ana said 1014 days ago:

I love that he has a flower on his hat!!

Mal said 1014 days ago:

I think that you should print and hang this along side the preacher man, a lovely marriage I believe.

RichardFord said 1014 days ago:

@ Tracy

I've never really felt threatened doing street. I must say though, I am not sure if my free pass that get is because I am huge or because I am a foreigner.

The little bit of street I have done in Aus has been different. 50% total ignore - which is better than China rubber necking and can make for more un disturbed scenes. 25% confusion as in China and 25% total dicks that seem to think the moment the camera is out they are their Kim Jong in their own little despot world and how dare anyone challenge/shoot them. :-s

Lemmingstone said 1014 days ago:

You too.
No, not you Tracy. I mean the guy with the tongue.

Hihosilver said 1014 days ago:

YIKES! He's so obnoxious which makes this image so funny, but I won't look for a marriage proposal from that guy...LOL! Well taken, Tracy!

TracyMartin said 1014 days ago:

Thank you everyone for your comments.

@Mal - this was taken a few blocks from where the street preacher was but on different days. I agree in your thinking that they are perfect together. :)

@Richard - Oh, I don't feel uncomfortable for my well being but I guess that is the way it came across. I feel guilty taking peoples pictures when they are unaware of it.

RichardFord said 1014 days ago:

@ Tracy

Feeling guilty needs a conscience. ;-) Seriously, I only ever feel guilty if I feel like I am being voyeuristic. I can't define what that is to me - as it is not necessarily something sexual or involving homeless or drunks or whatever. Just a small moral compass deep inside me that sometimes speaks up and say - just let this one pass.

As to safety. In Xinjiang province some of the dirty looks I got from the local muslims in Urumqi were very scary. I am not sure who they gave the bigger death stares to, the Han Chinese of the westerner. Either way - I didn't shoot any of them when in the big cities. Out in the smaller towns the attitude was much different.

I love this shot! Great moment, texture, content. Definitely makes you stop and look more.

King said 1013 days ago:

Almost too wonderful for words...and I don't mean the words visible in the shot.
